Saranac Lake session to teach wood-carving intro

SARANAC LAKE — BluSeed Studios is sponsoring a intro to wood carving course, “Release a Wood-Spirit Make a Walking Stick,” 9 a.m. to noon, July 24 through 26, with instructor Mark Paul.

The cost is $85 plus a $15 material fee and $30 tool rental (if needed).

This session, for ages 15 and up, will give beginning and experienced wood carvers an opportunity to carve a wood-spirit face in a locally harvested walking stick. The class will cover carving safety, carving tool care and use and how to select, season and prepare a walking stick blank. It is important to note that woodcarving tools are razor sharp, cuts are not uncommon. The instructor strongly recommends the use of cut resistant carving gloves. Tools to be had or rented are: a sharp carving knife and assorted gouges 6mm V-tool, 9mm #3 gouge, 8mm #6 gouge and a 2mm #11 Veiner. The instructor will have a limited number of tools to rent during the class. For those students that desire to continue to apply their new carving skills, blanks, carving gloves, knives and gouges will be available for purchase.

Paul is a retired forestry instructor and has been working with wood all his life. Paul has taught woodcarving in Saranac Lake, Plattsburgh and Vermont but he is proudest of his work with Saranac Lake Middle School Carving Club. In conjunction with the Saranac Lake School Art Department, Paul has taught more than 100 young artist/carvers over the past five years.

To reserve your spot or for further information please visit: bluseedstudios.org or call 891-3799. BluSeed is located at 24 Cedar St., Saranac Lake.
