Keene Central program recognized RICHVILLE — GardenShare presented its seventh-annual Growing Community Awards to Julie Holbrook for Keene Central School's gardening and composting project and to Cindy Harnas for South Jefferson Central School's farm-to-school project.
"Both of this year's awardees are school-based programs, which may be surprising to some because school cafeterias are often depicted as reheat-and-serve operations," said GardenShare board member Sarah Bentley-Garfinkel in a press release.
Keene Central School integrates composting and gardening with its educational curriculum to teach K-through-12 students about agriculture and healthy eating, the release said. Under the leadership of cafeteria manager Julie Holbrook, the school's organic vegetable garden contributes food to cafeteria lunches. Then after each meal, students, faculty and staff sort their tray waste for a composting operation that feeds the garden.

Markets move indoors SARANAC LAKE — The Saturday Saranac Lake Village Farmers' Market and the Lake Placid Farmers' Market are uniting on Saturdays throughout the fall to provide customers with indoor farmers market shopping in the Lake Placid Center for the Arts Annex Building.
Market dates are scheduled from Oct. 24 to Dec. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
New expanded market offerings include maple syrup, salad greens and fall vegetables, a press release said. Also available are chicken, eggs and meat along with cheese, wine, honey and bread. Other baked goods include cookies and pastries, and a local coffee roaster sells coffee by the cup and the pound.
"Market goers can relax with a massage after enjoying a lunch of soup and sandwich prepared right at the market," the release said.
The market is sponsored in part by the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, Green Goddess Natural Foods and the Ausable Valley Grange. For more information, call 524-7247 or 523-2512.
