Learn how to pickle beets at workshop
WHALLONSBURG — The Grange Community Kitchen will hold a cooking and food-preservation class on pickling beets at 6 p.m. Monday, April 22, in the Grange Hall kitchen, at the corner of Route 22 and Whallons Bay Road.
Barbara Kunzie, master food preservationist and farmer, will teach about sweet spring beets and hearty winter beets. Attendees will learn a simple, effective way to preserve the bounty.
There is a suggested donation of $5.
The Grange is fully equipped with canning supplies and equipment, including several pressure canners. It is certified as a commercial kitchen and is available for use by home-canners and value-added food producers.
Pack-basket workshop offered in Saranac Lake
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club is sponsoring an Adirondack pack-basket workshop from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 21, in the clubhouse at 726 Route 3.
Instruction will be given by Clear Creek Weavers, and there is a charge for the materials. The cost is $80 to build a 21-inch basket or $70 to build a 17-inch basket. Pack-basket harnesses will also be available. Registration is limited; contact Dave Bodah at 891-5989 or firstname.lastname@example.org to sign up.

‘Mushroom Cultivation’ workshop planned
PAUL SMITHS — The Paul Smith’s College VIC, 8023 Route 30, is hosting a “Holy Shiitake Mushroom Cultivation” workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 21.
Topics include learning about which tree species and spawn to use and log-cultivation and sawdust-inoculation methods. Attendees will also learn about growing guides, tools, supplies and vendors.
Bring a lunch. The workshop is free for Paul Smith’s College students, staff and faculty; a $5 donation is suggested for community members. Participants may take an inoculated log home for an additional $5.
