Local author to talk about new book
PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh Public Library at 19 Oak St. is hosting a book talk and signing with local author Joy Demarse from 2 to 3 p.m. today.
Demarse will speak about her new book, “Nine Days a Soldier: The Story of Aiken’s Volunteers in the War of 1812.”
Many of the events in the book, which is aimed at children in grades five through seven, take place at the former Plattsburgh Academy, the current location of the Plattsburgh Public Library.
History buffs of all ages are welcome to attend the free event.
200th anniversary of Pike’s Cantonment today
PLATTSBURGH — The 200th anniversary of Murray’s Raid at Plattsburgh during the War of 1812 will be held at 10 a.m. today at Pike’s Cantonment on Route 22, a half mile west of Plattsburgh International Airport’s entrance.
Craig Russell’s 15th N.Y. Infantry reenactors, canon and bugler will add color to the program of brief presentations of events 200 years ago associated with Pike’s Cantonment, and the dedication of an interpretive wayside exhibit.
Keith Herkalo, Battle of Plattsburgh association president, will retell the story of British Col. Murray’s raid on Plattsburgh and the burning of Pike’s Cantonment during the War of 1812. Jerry Bates, Town of Plattsburgh historian, will pay honor to the 200 American soldiers who perished during the winter encampment of 1812-1813. Bernie Bassett, Town of Plattsburgh supervisor, will conclude the program by dedicating an Interpretive Trail wayside informational exhibit that outlines the history of Pike’s Cantonment. The wayside exhibit was made possible through a grant from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership.
Robotics demonstrations today at Transportation Museum
PLATTSBURGH — The Clarkson University Robotics Team will hold live robotic demonstrations and hands-on, interactive activities for children from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Champlain Valley Transportation Museum at 12 Museum Way.
