Special WWII remembrance service planned

KEENE VALLEY — The 10th Mountain Division will be remembered at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Keene Valley Congregational Church, 1791 Route 73.

Twelve young men from Keene marched off to serve in World War II with this fabled unit. One of them helped form this unique unit, and several were involved in teaching mountaineering skills.

Charles Smith, the last remaining veteran from Keene, will be in attendance.

After showing the movie “The Last Ridge,” which outlines the incredible exploits of the unit, there will be a display of photos and memorabilia that reveal the experience of the brave men.

The program is presented by Marcy Post 1312 of the American Legion. Donations will be accepted to benefit the Keene Veterans Memorial.
