Painting Plattsburgh green

Champlain Valley Irish Dance hosts 'St. Patty's Day Pub Night'

PLATTSBURGH — This St. Patrick’s Day, the Champlain Valley Irish Dance’s “Paint the Town Green” campaign is shamrockin’.

Today marks “St. Patty’s Day Pub Night” at Olive Ridley’s in Plattsburgh.

The family-friendly event features a shepherd’s pie dinner, Irish step dancing, Ceili dancing and a “Best Wearin’ O’ the Green Contest.”

“We’re trying to do this for this school,” said Marcy McNally, a board member and parent.

“We’re also trying to establish a fund for costumes for shows in the community. Basic equipment the school needs, we could use a Marley floor, a very special floor. We’re looking for that so we’re able to go out into the community and perform. It’s a floor that’s portable. We have hard shoes. It protects the stage, and it’s also better for the dancers to dance on. Those are big ticket items.”

The school teaches the art of traditional Irish dancing.

Instructor Marie Short hails from the Bernadette Short School of Irish Dance in Montreal.

“We have approximately 40 students,” McNally said. “They range from age 5 to 18. It’s good, and it’s growing all the time. We have five children — Jillian Kane, Lexi Neal, Bella Girard, Claire Benoit and Sarah McNally — attending nationals in Montreal this year.”

The North American Irish Dance Championships will be held between July 2 and 7 in Montreal.

“They have to go to nationals before worlds,” McNally said. “You can qualify at another regional, the Oireachtas in Philadelphia. That takes place in the fall at Thanksgiving.”

At Saturday’s event, the “Best Wearin’ O’ the Green Contest” is open to the public.

“We encourage them to wear green,” McNally said. “We give trophies and things like that for the person that comes in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day. You should see some of the things. We’re trying to get everywhere to dance. We like to see this be our time of the year. It’s our season.”
