Bookstore Plus Storytime to focus on Olympics
LAKE PLACID — The Bookstore Plus in Lake Placid will host Second Saturday Storytime at 10 a.m. today.

Evening Children’s Story Time planned in Saranac Lake
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Free Library will host an evening Children’s Story Time Program at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, in the Children’s Room of the library.

PLATTSBURGH — Two Zumba parties will take place in center court, in front of JCPenney, in the Champlain Centre mall Sunday, Feb. 23.
The first party starts at noon, with the second slated for 2 p.m. Each Zumba session will be led by licensed Zumba instructors.
The Zumba sessions are free and all are invited to attend one or both sessions. There will also be giveaways for free Zumba classes, Zumba Apparel and other prizes.
PLATTSBURGH — The Battle of Plattsburgh Association has announced its 2014 Battle of Plattsburgh Bicentennial Essay Contest with more than $1,000 in prizes.
The contest, sponsored by the Battle of Plattsburgh Association and Adirondack Bank, in cooperation with the North Country Teacher Resource Center, will explore local history and the critical battle of the War of 1812.
The contest is open to students in grades four through 12.
All entries must be submitted to the Battle of Plattsburgh Association between March 3 and May 16. Winners will be notified by June 7; an awards reception is scheduled for June 14.
ALBANY — The New York State Writers Institute and the Office of the Dean of Special Programs at Skidmore College are co-sponsoring the 16th-annual New York State Summer Young Writers Institute from July 2 through 12 at the Skidmore College campus in Saratoga Springs.
The 12-day creative writing workshop is open to high school students who will be entering the 10th, 11th or 12th grade in the fall of the 2014 school year.
Participants in the Summer Young Writers Institute will receive instruction in poetry, fiction and imaginative nonfiction, and will engage in the critical evaluation of each other’s work. In addition, participants will attend readings and craft talks by the faculty and visiting writers for the New York State Summer Writers Institute — a workshop for college and post-college writers that also takes place on the Skidmore College campus during the month of July.
Admission and participation is limited to 40 students and will be determined by evaluation of creative writing selections submitted by the student applicants. Full and partial financial aid awards are available to qualified students based on need. The application deadline is April 1.
