Childrens summer programs
offered in Ti

TICONDEROGA — A new childrens program will begin at the Ticonderoga Cartoon Museum at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 8. Called Story-Art Hour, the one-hour session with appeal to elementary school-age children will include a combination of storytelling and easy drawing lessons, a press release said.

Advanced sign-up for the weekly session is suggested but not required. All elementary-age children may attend; preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult.

"Wednesdays are special days for kids in Ticonderoga," said a press release from museum Director Stan Burdick and Cathie Burdick of the Ticonderoga Festival Guild. "They can start by attending the Heritage Museum craft programs at 9 a.m. Following those are the Arts Trek programs under the tent at 10:15 a.m., sponsored by the Ticonderoga Festival Guild. After lunch, children can come to Story-Art at the Cartoon Museum, listen to stories and draw cartoons for an hour, affording a three-part entertainment combination, all with adult teaching and supervision."

Families invited
to library events

PERU — This summer's reading theme at Peru Free Library is "Be Creative at Your Library." The Summer Family Programs will feature a clown who puts his makeup on in front of his audience, a folk musician who plays songs that have been made into picture books, a juggler from Ringling Bros. Circus and a traveling theater duo who will perform "Pinocchio." The free programs are on Tuesdays in July at 2:30 p.m.

Peru Library will also participate in TD Banknorth's summer reading program. When a child reads

10 books, TD Banknorth will deposit $10 in a new Young Saver Account.

All events are free and suitable for the whole family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Writing contest winners announced
PLATTSBURGH — Mountain Lake PBS has announced the winners of its CHAMPLAIN CHRONICLES contest, which was created as an educational outreach component tied to the station's upcoming documentary, "Dead Reckoning ~ Champlain In America."

Middle-school students were encouraged to pretend they were a reporter in the time of Samuel de Champlain and write an article about an event during that time frame.

The first-place winners received an iPod, honorable mentions got gift certificates to Amazon.com, and each child who participated received a special Certificate of Achievement.

The sixth-grade winner is William Amato, Northern Adirondack Middle School; the eighth-grade winner is Jeanette Godreau, Saranac Lake Middle School; and honorable mentions went to: Chelsea Bjelko, Beekmantown Middle School; Kati Buck, Saranac Lake Middle School; Rheanna Meier, Northeastern Clinton Middle/High School; Pascal Spronk, Plattsburgh; Anna Stitt, Beekmantown Middle School; and Teddy Yanchitis, Saranac Lake Middle School.

The documentary "Dead Reckoning ~ Champlain In America" presents the story of Champlain, as a man who failed to find a northwest passage to China, but instead laid the foundation for a multicultural nation in North America. It is scheduled to premiere on public television this fall.

Trip planned to Great Escape
PLATTSBURGH — The Town of Plattsburgh is sponsoring a family trip to The Great Escape in Lake George on July 25.

The town will provide a school bus for transportation to the park, with departure from the Town of Plattsburgh Offices on Banker Road at 8 a.m. sharp, a press release said. The bus will leave The Great Escape at 6 p.m.

The trip is open to families who reside within the Town of Plattsburgh. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Tickets are $35 per person, which includes transportation to and from park, admission and lunch. Ticket fees will be due at time of registration, which, with pre-payment, is mandatory by Friday, July 10. Register at the Recreation Office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Spaces will be filled on a first-come first serve basis. For information, call the Recreation Office at 562-6860.

Free movies for kids to start June 30
PLATTSBURGH — Regal Entertainment Group will host a nine-week Free Family Film Festival beginning June 30 through Aug. 26 at Regal Champlain Centre Cinemas 8, Champlain Centre Mall.

A selection of G- and PG-rated movies will be shown at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays to entertain local children while they're out of school for the summer. Admission is free, with seating limited to auditorium capacity.

Special kid's combo snacks will be available.

The Free Family Film Festival is a project of Regal Entertainment Group, the Cartoon Network and the following local sponsors: Reality Check, Champlain Centres, WIRY Radio, Y106.3 Radio and the Press-Republican.

Arts program to begin Monday
BEEKMANTOWN — The Beekmantown Youth Commission is sponsoring an Arts-n-Crafts Camp for students in grades 2 through 8 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 29, through Friday, July 3, at the Beekmantown Town Hall.

Campers should bring a water bottle and snack. Registration is 8:30 a.m. Monday, June 29, at the Town Hall.

The program is free to residents of Beekmantown; the non-resident fee is $36.
