Diocese-wide fundraising effort brings in $100,792
OGDENSBURG — The Diocese of Ogdensburg-wide collection for the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund has reached more than $100,792.
In a news release, the Most Rev. Terry R. LaValley, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg, said he is gratified by the generosity of those who were able to reach out to help their suffering neighbors in the New York City and New Jersey areas.
The upstate dioceses of Albany, Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and Ogdensburg decided to pool their contributions. A check for more than $1 million will be presented to Ms. Laura Cassell, diocesan director for Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Rockville Center.
Cassell will oversee the distribution of and accountability for the funds. The funds will be used by Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of New York, Brooklyn and Rockville Center dioceses for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. The Catholic Charities directors from the downstate dioceses will provide regular reports on the use of the funds. These reports will be made public.
Lenten Bible Study starts Feb. 9
ELLENBURG CENTER — Our Lady of the Adirondacks House of Prayer is offering a Lenten Bible Study Program from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Feb. 9 and 16; March 9 and 16; and April 6.
Attendees will reflect on themes of Lent to bring each person face to face with some of the tough challenges they can face in living a life in imitation of Christ. Drawing heavily from scripture, through the discussions in these sessions, participants will discover the depth of their capacity for caring for others and, in doing so, fully realize the depth of God’s care and love for themselves. The topics will be sacrifice, forgiveness, compassion, suffering and triumph.
