PLATTSBURGH — Auschwitz survivor Hermann Gruenweld will speak during one of several events commemorating the Holocaust at Plattsburgh State next week.
The Montreal man will show a short video of his return to the concentration camp in 2003, offer some remarks, then take questions and comments from the audience at the 7:30 p.m. presentation Tuesday, April 29, in Yokum Hall’s room 202.
The public is invited to that event and all Holocaust memorial activities at the college, which will begin at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday with commemorative non-religious services at the Holocaust Memorial in Feinberg Library.
Dr. Jonathan Slater, associate professor of communication and organizer of the events, will speak briefly, as will Dr. Douglas Skopp, retired professor of history, and two members of the campus Hillel Society.
At 4 p.m., for about an hour, Gruenweld will autograph copies of his book, “After Auschwitz: One Man’s Story,” at the college bookstore. It will be available there and at the Campus Express store in Angell College Center all week, Slater said.
At 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, will be the installation at Feinberg Library of a series of relief sculptures called “Kaddish in Wood” donated by Dr. Herbert Savel of Elizabethtown.
The artist’s works are remembrances in wood based on photographs of Holocaust victims. Kaddish is the Jewish prayer of mourning.
“They will become part of the Holocaust Memorial,” said Slater.
The film “I Will Never Forget You: The Life and Legacy of Simon Wiesenthal” will be shown at 7 p.m. in Yokum Hall’s room 202.
“He was a survivor and probably the most famous Nazi hunter of our time,” Slater said. “This is a very compelling film.”
Thomas Cohen, adjunct lecturer of communication, will lead a short dialogue with the audience after the film.
