AARP Tax Aide needs recruits

PLATTSBURGH  — Kate Gardner is looking for more than a few tax facilitators, meeters and greeters, to help the smooth running of AARP Tax Aide sites in Clinton and Essex counties for this 2013 tax season.

“RSVP provides volunteers as Internal Revenue Service trained-tax preparers, and we also provide tax facilitators,” said Gardner, director of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programs in Clinton and Essex counties.

“The number is approximately 50 people to help Clinton County citizens with their 2013 tax preparation and to help them gain earned-income tax credit. This service helps senior citizens, families and middle-income individuals to receive earned-income tax credit, which they are eligible for and they deserve.”

The program’s goal is to have Clinton and Essex counties’ residents develop financial literacy and asset building.

“To use the tax credit to pay much needed fuel bills and build savings accounts for winter emergencies,” Gardner said.

“We partner on this project with the United Way of the Adirondack Region, the Internal Revenue Service and SUNY Plattsburgh, who provides accounting students, and many other organizations and financial institutions. The Senior Citizens Council is a huge partner because they provide the site.”

In Plattsburgh, the Senior Center site is now the third largest in northern New York behind Rochester and Syracuse.

“The projections are we will be serving close to 4,000 Clinton County residents this year,” Gardner said.

“We’re also recruiting for Essex County as well. The Essex County site, we’re still trying to get the site. We hope to do it in Port Henry or Moriah. It may be in Elizabethtown. We are unclear where the site will be. That’s still a work-in-progress.”
