---- — ELIZABETHTOWN — Essex County lawmakers expect to transfer the county’s Horace Nye Nursing Home to private ownership before the end of the year.
The Centers for Specialty Care of the Bronx bought the 100-bed facility for $4.05 million in June 1012, but it has taken until now to really get rolling.
County Attorney Daniel Manning III told the County Board of Supervisors the last issue to be worked out was contamination in the septic and stormwater system at the Nursing Home, and that has recently been resolved.
“We’re getting to the stage where we hear from the DOH (State Department of Health),” he said.
A Certificate of Need, which is the operating license for the Nursing Home, was applied for in March, he said.
Once the license is granted by the state, the Centers for Specialty Care and the county will set a transfer date.
At this week’s Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Thomas Scozzafava (R-Moriah) said he wanted to be sure rumors he’s heard that the new owner plans to cut back services are not true.
“There are rumors out there that they will not provide some of the services we provide now,” he said.
Manning said the contract that was signed by the new owner specifies what the company can and cannot do, so the facility will be operated about the same as now after the transfer.
“We put very specific items in the contract,” he said.
The Centers for Specialty Care is obligated by the agreement to offer jobs to current Horace Nye employees, to give first preference for beds to county residents and to allow all residents there now to stay if they wish.
About 135 people work at Horace Nye.
The sale includes the building, lawn and parking lot, a total of 3.2 acres. National broker Marcus & Millichap of Chicago marketed the home for the county after supervisors said its $2 million-a-year deficit was too much to maintain.
The Centers for Specialty Care also operates nursing homes that were previously county-owned in Fulton and other counties.
