ELIZABETHTOWN — A sprinkler system has been installed in one building at Essex County’s Horace Nye Nursing Home.
Work is ongoing in the other building, county lawmakers were informed recently.
Nursing Home Administrator Deborah Gifford told the County Board of Supervisors Human Services Committee that all the sprinkler piping has been installed.
“In (building) two, the lower level is substantially complete; all that remains downstairs is the painting of the piping and the riser work. On the main level, in the resident area, the main supply piping has been run in the corridor, and the cross-sections need to be done yet.”
In building one, the system is functional, she said.
“The work itself is physically, substantially complete. There are a couple of punch-list items remaining; they are going to be completed within the near future, but they are just ancillary items.”
Albany Fire Protection in Watervliet was the low bidder at $397,600 for both buildings at the county-owned facility.
“I have to say the workers have been very professional, very courteous,” Gifford said. “We’ve had no issues with safety or otherwise.
“We do continue to meet every other week, and both parties are aware of what needs to be done and what remains.”
The sprinkler system was required by new federal regulations enforced by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The center threatened to withhold funding from the Nursing Home if the work was not done.
The county is completing sale of the Nursing Home to the Bronx-based Centers for Specialty Care, but the sprinkler installation had to be done by an August deadline.
The county also expects it will have to spend about $20,000 to replace a failing power transformer at the Nursing Home.
Gifford said a 12-hour outage at the facility will be necessary during the replacement.
“We have a generator,” she said. “It is a generator that runs all the necessary components, and for that period of time, given that we’re in the warmer time of year with longer daylight hours, we should be fine.”
