---- — MALONE — Alice Hyde Medical Center and Franklin County will break ground on a $35 million merged nursing-home and assisted-living facility on Aug. 2.
The plan is to build a 135-bed skilled-nursing facility with 30 assisted-living beds to replace the existing nursing homes that each entity has operated since 1968.
The County Nursing Home on Finney Boulevard is an 80-bed facility, and Alice Hyde’s nursing home off Park Street has 75 beds.
The merged facility is expected to be opened in 2014.
ROOM TO EXPAND
P.C. Construction of South Burlington, Vt., will build the facility.
Skilled-nursing care will be offered in a three-story building that reduces to two stories at the rear. A large courtyard is at its center.
An attached two-story structure to the right of the main site will be assisted-living space with room for future expansion.
There are 27 nursing-care beds on the first floor and 28 skilled-care beds and 56 skilled-nursing beds on the second floor on both sides of the courtyard.
The third-floor “neighborhood wing” has 11 resident rooms, and there are 12 clinically complex beds and 12 rehabilitation beds.
The 30 assisted-living bedrooms are each 408 square feet, and there is a social area, common living room and dining room.
For its share of the merger, Franklin County will pay the Medical Center $1 million a year for 10 years.
Legislators have not decided how they will use the Finney Boulevard site once the merger takes place.
It has been discussed as a satellite space for county offices to ease overcrowding and save on rental expenses.
The groundbreaking is set for 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at the construction site on a new road just north of 199 Park St.
A number of dignitaries are invited, including Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury), Assemblywoman Janet Duprey (R-Peru), Franklin County legislators and village and town of Malone officials, among others, said Hospital Communications Director Cathlyn Lamitie.
She said Gov. Andrew Cuomo was invited but is unable to attend the ceremony.
