Adult Center to host meal with music ST. REGIS FALLS — The St. Regis Falls Adult Center will host an evening meal at 5 p.m. this Thursday. The Old Timer's Band will play from 6 to 9 p.m. The menu will be barbecued chicken, coleslaw, macaroni salad, rolls and brownies for dessert. The price is $7 for adults (including admission for the band), $4 for children under 12 and $1 for ages 5 and under.
Those who just attend to hear the band will pay $3 each.
Computer Club to meet July 6 PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Senior Computer Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 6, in the Senior Center, 5139 North Catherine St., Plattsburgh.
Julie Dowd, librarian and Webmaster for the Northern New York American Canadian Genealogical Society, will show how to search on the computer for French Canadian and other ethnic ancestors. She will also go through her database of French Canadian names and attempt to match members of the audience with their relatives who may have "walked with Champlain" 400 years ago.
All are welcome.
SOAR celebrates, invites new members POTSDAM — At the spring luncheon of the St. Lawrence County organization SOAR (Stimulating Opportunities After Retirement), Fran and Otis Van Horne were honored as the "Super SOARers" of the year.
Otis, the treasurer, was dubbed SOAR's "Financial Wizard" because "he gives wise counsel for a steady, balanced approach to managing the budget and personnel," a press release said.
Fran was crowned the "Queen of SOAR," for she has delivered a number of popular courses on the Royalty of Europe and the First Ladies of the United States, said the release. Both Fran and Otis have been active board members, presenters and leaders of the organization for many years.
SOAR, a lifelong learning group in the North Country, is sponsored by SUNY Potsdam through its Center for Lifelong Education and Recreation. Membership is $65 per year, which entitles members to register for as many courses as they like. Franklin County residents are among those who participate.
The 10-week SOAR fall semester begins Sept. 14 with about 50 courses available. About half the courses are taught on the SUNY Potsdam campus; the rest are offered at a number of public places in the Potsdam-Canton area.
