Wound Care Center to open at CVPH Plaza

PLATTSBURGH — A new department at CVPH Medical Center will offer expanded wound-care services for outpatients battling chronic wounds that have been hard to heal.

The CVPH Wound Care Center, located in Suite 102 at the CVPH Health Plaza near Hannaford, will open to patients beginning Wednesday, May 1.

An open house is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, April 29, to provide residents with an opportunity to tour the new facility, including its impressive hyperbaric-oxygen therapy equipment that can help promote healing in certain kinds of wounds.

“It causes the body to hold onto more oxygen, helping wounds heal from the inside out,” said Tristina Haley, a registered nurse for the Wound Care Center.

Patients lie on their backs in a clear capsule during the treatment, which can last for up to two hours, Haley explained. The equipment is not used for all patients but can be very effective for those who will benefit, she added.

Fewer than 20 percent of the patients will need hyperbaric treatments, Haley noted.

Patients will be referred to the Wound Care Center by their primary-care doctors, and a plan will be established for proper treatment of wounds that have had a difficult time healing.

“There is a great need for wound care in the community,” said registered nurse Dana Welch, who will be on duty with Haley and hyperbaric technician Stacey Wood from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. “We’re hoping this will be a huge success for patients who have had trouble with wound care.”

The staff will also include one per diem nurse as needed, and doctors will be assigned coverage at the facility as well.

Patients receiving inpatient wound care during their stay at the Medical Center will also be referred to the Wound Care Center upon discharge, program director Penny Pitts said.
