PLATTSBURGH — The Adirondack Youth Orchestra presents “Folk Tunes and National Anthems” for its annual fall concert Sunday at Plattsburgh High School’s auditorium.
Before the full orchestra’s program under the direction of Todd Pray, the Adirondack Youth Strings will perform under the direction Casey Ann Fitzsimmons, Adirondack Youth Mezzo under the direction of Kate Bulluck and Adirondack Youth Winds under the direction of David Yonteff.
“We’re performing three pieces that are beginning-level foundation string pieces,” Fitzsimmons said. “The first one is called ‘Echoes’ by Robert S. Frost. The second is ‘Hunters’ Chorus’ by Carl Maria von Weber, and the third piece is called ‘Legend of Dark Mountain’ by Soon Hee Newbold. ‘Echoes’ demonstrates call and answer. ‘Hunters’ Chorus’ uses the D-major scale and introduces eighth notes. ‘Legend of Dark Mountain’ emphasizes accents, dynamics and style changes.”
“Legend of Dark Mountain” was the most challenging for the string players.
“There is a lot of energy, contrasts in dynamics, and the students have to switch from pizzicato, which is plucking, back to arco, meaning bow,” Fitzsimmons said.
Sunday’s program has patriotic selections from the full orchestra.
“Our program is a combination of folk music and national-anthem music,” Pray said. “Music that has started off as folk music and over time became an anthem for the country, not necessarily a national anthem.”
Selections include “Variations on a Korean Folk Song.”
“We’re playing a tribute to Veterans Day, a tune called the ‘Blue and the Gray.’ It’s a medley of Civil War tunes. We’re playing ‘America the Beautiful’ and ‘Hatikvah,’ the national anthem of Israel,” Pray said.
Peru Central School senior Natasha Lindor’s composition, “Euphoria,” will be debuted.
“She plays violin and will be featured as a soloist in that tune. It’s for string quartet, basically, though we have added a few players to it. It’s one movement, short and happy.”
