Program helps adults make healthy food choices
PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Health Department is offering a new resource for residents looking to make healthier eating choices.
Supermarket Smarts, offered through the support of Eastern Adirondack Healthcare Network’s Get Moving for Health Aging Initiative, is a store-based tour highlighting common nutrition recommendations people often receive from their health-care providers. Tours explore topics such as identifying whole grains and heart-healthy fats, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption and translating label lingo.
The free service is facilitated by a registered dietitian. The initiative targets adults 55 years and older. The first 100 participants earn a $10 gift card to practice their new skills; and all will receive a recipe book, reusable grocery tote and other goodies.
Tours last about an hour and are being provided at several area grocery stores and on various dates and times. Those interested in signing up should call the Health Department at 565-4993.
