High Peaks Hospice remembrance gathering scheduled
PORT HENRY — High Peaks Hospice and Palliative Care will hold hold a special memorial service at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, to honor the memory of those the organization has served and who died between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2013.
Each person is remembered by name and loved ones are invited to light a candle in their memory. The service will include readings and music with light refreshments immediately following. High Peaks Hospice is extending a special invitation to other members of the community who have suffered a loss.
The service will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 72 S. Main St. in Port Henry.

Free testing available for STIs
TICONDEROGA — Essex County residents can get free testing for sexually transmitted infections from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 9 and 23, at Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson, 171 Lake George Ave.
Those interested in the service do not need to be a Planned Parenthood patient to get tested. Walk-ins are welcome (first-come, first-served), but it’s best to call 792-0994 and reserve an appointment time.
Child Safe Summit coming up Oct. 10
AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is hosting a Child Safe Summit from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m Thursday, Oct. 10 and Monday, Oct. 21, at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort.
The conference is a collective effort to educate and inform service providers of indicators, resources and to dispel any myths pertaining to child physical abuse and child sex abuse. The summit is tailored to afford agencies time to participate in a panel discussion of services offered in the community of Akwesasne and surrounding areas.
Speakers include Dr. Karyn Patno, the clinical director and founder of the Child Safe Program of Vermont, and Timothy Losito, special agent at the Office of Homeland Security Investigation.
