25 YEARS AGO — 1987

The cost of getting rid of garbage in Franklin County is steadily climbing. The current cost is $45 per ton, compared to the $2 per ton charged in Clinton County.

Despite recent issues with an electrical contractor, the Champlain Centre North is still scheduled to open on July 1.

The Clinton County Historical Museum is displaying an art, heirloom, and relics exhibit titled “Clinton Prison at Dannemora” in celebration of the prison’s 150 years of operation.

Semra Aytur, Arthur J. Brohinsky and Lynn M. Ellis are sharing the honor of being the valedictorians of Plattsburgh High School’s class of 1987. The three of them have managed to share the exact same average for their entire four years in high school.

50 YEARS AGO — 1962

Nine people were pulled from Lake Champlain after two boats capsized — the second while trying to rescue the six passengers from the first. All nine were taken to Champlain Valley Hospital.

Dr. Joseph Rudmin, health commissioner, has announced that there hasn’t been a single case of Polio in Clinton County since the mass immunization battle three years ago.

75 YEARS AGO — 1937

Plattsburgh’s Garden Club is hosting their annual flower show at the Y.M.C.A., this years opening day attracted more patrons than previously on record, reeling in at least 500 visitors.

Roy Lemieux of Plattsburgh found a coin dated 1787 on Cumberland Head, and spent his day seeking a coin collector to identify the piece. The denomination of the coin is not known.

Ernest Mallette, 37, and Bernie Trombley, 33, of Malone both suffered severe burns from a gasoline explosion. The two were pouring gas into the tank of an operating cement mixer when the fluid combusted. Both men are in Alice Hyde hospital.

100 YEARS AGO — 1912

Prof. Guy Benton, president of the University of Vermont, will be delivering a speech addressed to the Graduates of Plattsburgh High School.
