25 YEARS AGO — 1987

Despite the town lawmakers decision to re-open the Ticonderoga Civic Center, Essex County Head Start officials are wary about resuming operation in the 81-year-old structure. Head Start Director Nancy Pierce said that, even if the building passes local safety codes, Head Start still has to reapply for a state day-care license — a standard that the building might not pass.

Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. has asked state regulators to approved a $151.4 million hike in it’s electric rates. The corperation needs the extra money to recover from it’s expenses from it’s Nine Mile Point 2 nuclear plant project.

A clock manufactured by the Baird Clock Company, which sat at 18 Bridge St., Plattsburgh, in the late 19th century, sold in a London auction for $1,056.

Steinbach Department Store has signed on to become the forth anchor store at the Champlain Centre North mall.

50 YEARS AGO — 1962

Pail Smith’s College of Arts and Sciences has purchased the six story Hotel Saranac with all of it’s equipment, according to Richard J. Longtin, president of the college board of trustees.

Many Air Force bases have been getting federal grants for construction, including Plattsburgh Air Force Base, which is receiving $60,000.

Architect Warren H. Ashley of West Hartford, Conn., and Albert Dolter, State Education Department building and ground division supervisor, will be leading Plattsburgh High School officials and board members on a tour of possible sites for the new high school building.

75 YEARS AGO — 1937

Hotel Saranac faces foreclosure at the hands of a Mrs. Rita Marshall Snider, holder of $275,000 in mortgages against the hotel. Mrs. Snider is demanding the immediate payment of $53,000 interest and $25,000 towards the mortgages — a fee the hotel and it’s stock holders can’t afford to pay.

Two New York City canoeist who passed through Plattsburgh a year ago — Sheldon Taylor, 26, and Geoffery Pope, 24 — have officially finished their 6,000 mile canoe trip to Nome, Alaska.
