25 YEARS AGO — 1987

▶ Ticonderoga lawmakers approve of a $1.2 million budget, meaning the property tax rate will go up 16 percent.

▶ Consulting civil engineer Darin V. Liska is against the replacement of the South Catherine Street Bridge. Liska believes that the repair of the bridge would be more cost efficient than the destroying it and building a new one, stating that "arch bridges like this one, if firmly based on rock, can last for centuries."

▶ Clyde Rabideau, owner of the Checkers Deli Cafe in Plattsburgh, held the first-ever Secretaries Day Chair Race to raise money for the March of Dimes. Nearly $300 was raised. Dick Cronin and his secretary Elyse Zielinkski won the contest.

50 YEARS AGO — 1962

▶ Private sugarbush owners in the Elizabethtown area have allowed the historical society to tap more than 300 gallons of sap from their trees for the Sixth Annual Adirondack Maple Sugar Festival. The festival is being hosted by the Elizabethtown Kiwanis Club and the Essex County Historical Society. It will feature a pancake dinner, an art exhibit, musical performances from the Lytle Family and more.

▶ The Clinton County Soil Conservation District has started planting the 200,000 trees that are set to be in the ground by the end of this year. The species being planted include white pine, scotch pine, red pine, white spruce and Japaneses larch.

▶ The Morrisonville Fire Department battled seven fires in one day, most of which were grass fires. One grass fire did $7,000 damage to a barn, another scorched a tool shed, there was a dump fire, then finally another grass fire to top it all off at the end of the day.

▶ A survey of customs stations on the U.S.-Canadian border showed that an estimated 45,000 people crossed from Quebec to Clinton County during Easter weekend. Most of the 45,000 returned the following Monday.
