Lookback: Week of April 21 to 27

25 YEARS — 1989

• In celebration of French-Canadian heritage, high school students at Chazy Central Rural School were involved in a variety of pursuits to accentuate its contribution to our society. For the culmination on the third annual French Connection Day, students from the Center for the Study of Canada at SUNY Plattsburgh gave a presentation that started with a film contrasting the differences between old and new Quebec.

• North Country residents gathered at High Peaks Base Camp in Wilmington to take part in Earth-Day Adirondack celebrations, including a mountain bike bonanza, nature hikes, kite flying, face painting and more. Dan Plumley, chairman and founder, said the event, which began in 1970, is designed to celebrate the beauty of the Adirondacks while helping people see their responsibility in protecting the region’s environment.

• Ticonderoga Central School Superintendent Dr. Robert Collins Jr. told the board of education that the school will form leadership teams of staff since researchers found that schools with a collaborative approach did well. He said Ticonderoga has already had an Effective School Consortium Day and has now formed the teams “to act as a think-tank, to take a look at the school, what needs improvement, what works.”

50 YEARS — 1964

• The Willsboro Town Board has set up a tentative water rate program in conjunction with the starting of the town’s first water meter usage. The board entered the plan after receipt of numerous complaints by business establishments of the present $9-a-quarter rate. Household consumers are now charged $6 per quarter.

• Mayor Leo Letourneau and the village board have accepted Saxony Hotel owner William Kirk’s offer to pay for special nighttime patrolmen in an effort to halt rowdy behavior. Kirk made the offer at this week’s board meeting after 45 people turned up to complain about an early morning scuffle that broke out near Champlain and Lake streets.
