25 YEARS AGO — 1987

Statistics show that the cost of food in Plattsburgh was higher than it’s been in four years this past June with an average cost increase of 3.12 percent. The items that spiked the most were white potatoes, meats, and chocolate cream-filled cookies.

The National Recreation Park Association is sponsoring a kids’ dog show at Moirah Central School. The human contestants must be between the ages of four and 14.

The Plattsburgh Rotary Club, an all-male establishment for local business leaders, has voted unanimously to allow women admission to the club.

The Town of Plattsburgh Planning Board has made arrangements to have a new 50,573-square-foot food market across from the Champlain Centre North.

50 YEARS AGO — 1962

Members of Peru Co-operative Apple Storage Inc. are hoping to have a new storage area at least partially built before this years apple harvest. Their original storage area was virtually wiped out in a $350,000 fire earlier this week.

The state has given Plattsburgh’s Municipal Lighting Department permission to lower it’s electric rates. The cut will save residential users a total of $48,000 annually.

St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Peru raised more than $3,000 at it’s third annual Bazaar and Chicken Barbecue. The revenue will go to St. Augustine’s parochial school for textbooks and equipment.

State Police in Keeseville have called off the search for 18-year-old Bruce Piper of Chappaqua, who is believed to have drowned in Lake Champlain on July 7.

75 YEARS AGO — 1937

Plattsburgh taxi driver Edward Corron suffered a bad fracture to his left leg during an accident at the funeral of Mrs. Ernest Fournier in Redford. Corron was assisting the undertaker in carrying the casket down the front steps of the porch when the steps gave way, causing the injury.

The Woman’s League of the Physician’s Hospital has completed their plans to sponsor a card party July 21. The funds raised by the event benefit the hospital.
