25 YEARS AGO — 1987

▶ A state bill removing junk food from school lunches has made it’s way to Governor Mario Cuomo’s desk — and some local school districts are concerned. “I wish we didn’t have to sell (junk food), but we kind of got forced into it, because of the (federal support) that was taken from us from the government, the funding. The only thing that’s really saving our operation is the snack line,” said Carol Hay, who runs the school lunch programs in Chazy.

▶ The AuSable Valley Jaycees is raising $43,500 to buy a new ambulance, and so far the public response has been good and donations have been coming in steadily — however about 350 letters have been mailed out to those who haven’t donated yet expressing the importance of a new ambulance.

▶ Construction at the Plattsburgh city Water Pollution Control Plant has once again come to a stand still after city aldermen threw out the bids on the electrical installment. Now the contract will be rebid for a second time.

50 YEARS AGO — 1962

▶ Clara A. Bulriss, 16, of Mooers and Stella Wray, 28, of Altona went missing for 15 hours after wandering into the Flat Rock area between Altona and West Chazy to pick berries. The pair found a farm house near West Chazy at 9 p.m. after volunteer firemen from Altona had begun to search for them.

▶ Plattsburgh resident 66-year-old Blanche Caesar won first place at the Ninth Annual Adirondack International Exhibition in Saranac Lake with her oil painting “Expression No.3.”

▶ The $185,000 construction project of a new sewer treatment plant and fire station in Dannemora is set to be under way, according to Mayor William Donahue.

▶ Nineteen 4-H Campers from Essex County are going across Lake Champlain to our neighboring 4-H camp, Camp Ingalls, in Vermont, for a three week stay.
