25 YEARS AGO -- 1983
Despite reports to the contrary, a proposed new $2.7 million prison at Ray Brook is alive and kicking its way toward the final decision maker -- the United States Congress.
The Fort Ticonderoga Association rejects a $5 million offer of resort developer Vincent P. Salierno to buy the fort. The association says the fort is not for sale.
A member of Clinton County's Alcohol Beverage Control Board says he won't be reappointed to the post because he refused to reverse his vote on the recent 2 a.m. bar closings. Clinton S. Stevenson, the Democratic appointee, says Bernard Amell, the Democratic Party chairman, ordered him to reverse his vote on the recent bar closings or risk losing his appointment.
Although it may be a little chilly to think about heading for the City Beach, workers are cleaning up the property and plans are taking shape for a Memorial Day weekend opening. The city will be operating the beach this year.
50 YEARS AGO -- 1958
A total of 26 buildings are under construction as work on the 1,685-unit Capehart housing project gathers momentum at Plattsburgh Air Force Base. The first 120 units are scheduled for turn over to the Air Force in late June.
Some 1,700 worshippers attend Easter sunrise services at Plattsburgh Air Force Base -- before the rain began to fall. The interdenominational service was held at the base gymnasium.
An attempt will be made to stir up some action in official circles regarding a new post office for Plattsburgh. Hopes for a new Plattsburgh post office faded when it was learned the city is not on the list of municipalities slated for new facilities.
Clinton County supervisors will be in their new offices in about two weeks. Before the renovation work began on the courthouse, there was no third floor. However, the ceiling of the old courtroom on the second floor was lowered to provide the space.
75 YEARS AGO -- 1933
The Feinberg-Porter Bill authorizing the issuance of bonds in the sum of $1 million by the state of New York for its share toward the construction of a new bridge across Lake Champlain at Rouses Point is passed by the Senate. It now goes to the governor.
President Franklin Roosevelt is invited by Representative Bertrand Snell, Republican floor leader, and John B. Creighton, a summer resident of Wilmington, to attend the opening of the Whiteface Mountain Highway next August.
After the third day beer was legal in the city, it was still relatively dry. One Plattsburgh grocer had two cases of the 3.2 beer which sold out in an hour.
Four farmers in Franklin County have already ordered hop roots from a grower in Yakima, Wash., and perhaps 20 acres will be set out to the vines in the spring.
