— 25 YEARS AGO -- 1983
Work will begin next month on a $550,000 snowmaking expansion at Whiteface Mountain. The expansion will increase the overall snowmaking capacity to 83 percent of the skiable terrain.
International Paper Co. drops its multi-million-dollar tax suit against the Town of Ticonderoga. IP wants its $7 million assessment cut in half.
Closing hours for bars in Clinton County will be moved from 4 a.m. to 2 a.m. on the morning of Monday, April 4. The new hours will also apply to alcohol sales by grocery stores, restaurants and private clubs.
Franklin County may follow Clinton County's recent action to close bars earlier. At a Saranac Lake Village Board meeting a dormant discussion about changing bar hours was revived.
50 YEARS AGO -- 1958
The apparent low bids on the proposed new Clinton County Jail totaled $608,638. Action on the contracts was postponed pending study of the bids submitted.
St. John's Parish is to advertise for bids on a new convent to adjoin the new St. John's Academy on Broad Street. The convent will furnish quarters for the 30 Sisters of Mercy who teach at the parish schools.
Frechette Construction Co. of Tupper Lake is set to begin construction of the proposed $1 million Champlain Central School. Frechette is the general contractor.
Curtailment of Delaware and Hudson passenger-train service to Plattsburgh apparently means loss of employment for some. But there is no indication of how many would be affected.
75 YEARS AGO -- 1933
The Oval Wood Dish Co. of Tupper Lake, manufacturers of hardwood products, in one of the shortest hauling seasons on record moved more than 3 million feet of choice hardwood from the Racquette Mountain Road and the Santa Clara section.
Essex County this year has a total enrollment of 16,170 voters as against 12,542 in 1932, a gain of 28 percent. Practically every town in the county shows gains.
The Village of Saranac Lake will go on Daylight Savings Time June 14 and continue until Aug. 27 as a result of village elections.
100 YEARS AGO -- 1908
Both mills of the Ticonderoga Pulp and Paper Co. in Ticonderoga Village close for an indefinite period of time, and it is rumored that the International Paper mill in Ticonderoga will also close.
The Plattsburgh Board of Public Works is seeking bids for materials and labor to construct between 3,500 and 4,000 square yards of asphalt block pavement on Margaret Street from the present pavement southerly to Division Alley and north to Cornelia Street.
The district attorney of Franklin County is getting after violators of the liquor tax in the Village of Chateaugay and making things lively for them.
At a meeting of the Board of Trustees of Malone, the office of chief of police in that village is abolished.
