Students: Sept. 4, 2013


---- — Kelsey Stay of Plattsburgh, a SUNY Buffalo art student, has two paintings on display in New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Washington, D.C., office through May 2014. Stay’s oil paintings are among 15 art pieces chosen from within the State University of New York system for exhibit in Cuomo’s office. A panel of SUNY art professors and members of the New York State Arts Council selected the pieces. This is the second year for SUNY artwork to be displayed in this venue.

Caroline May Lynch of Menands, daughter of the late Jim and Mary Lou Lynch, who lived in Chazy, received a master’s degree in counseling and community psychology from Sage Graduate School, Albany.

Kalee M. Smith, daughter of Mark and Wendy Smith of Morrisonville, has been named to the Dean’s List at LeMoyne College in Syracuse. She graduated from Saranac Central School and is a member of the class of 2015, majoring in psychology.

Three area residents graduated from SUNY Oneonta. Brianna Boliver of Morrisonville received a bachelor’s degree in biology; Sean Conery of Plattsburgh earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics; and Carly Tubbs of Ticonderoga earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Morrisville State College has named four local students to the Dean’s List: Jacob Duquette of Plattsburgh, Kirstin Lagree of Bloomingdale, Nicole Lagree of Bloomingdale and Michaela Quinn of Brushton.

Ann Cantwell of Saranac Lake has been named to the Dean’s List at Union College, Schenectady. She is an economics major.

Connor Manning of Upper Jay and Deirdre Spilman of Plattsburgh have been named to the Dean’s List at St. Bonaventure University. Manning majors in sport studies, and Spilman is a journalism-mass communications major.

Local residents named to the Dean’s List at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute are Steven Burpoe of Saranac Lake, Alec DuMond of Ray Brook, Arthur Ford of Plattsburgh, Michael Higgins of Peru, Gabriel Jaquish of Moriah, Lauryn Menard of Morrisonville, Veronique Parker of Saranac Lake, Pratik Patel of Fort Covington, Brandon Terry of Morrisonville and Brennan Thierry of Moriah Center.

Marnie Reynolds of Plattsburgh has been inducted into the International Education Honor Society Kappa Delta Pi at Nazareth College, Rochester. She is a senior.

SUNY Oswego has awarded a $6,000 Dean’s Award to Mary Catherine Mazzella of Peru. The award recognizes past academic achievement and potential for success. She is a graduate of Peru Senior High School and will attend SUNY Oswego. 

The following area residents earned undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates of advanced study at The College of Saint Rose in Albany: Matthew Henderson of Cadyville, Bachelor of Arts; Andrew Matott of Rouses Point, Bachelor of Arts; Nicole Blair of Saranac, Bachelor of Arts; Tennyson Snyder of Wilmington, Bachelor of Arts; Casey Loughan of Plattsburgh, Bachelor of Science; Allison Bruso of Chateaugay, Bachelor of Science;  Sherrilynn Guffey of Mineville, combined Bachelor of Science/Master of Science; Kenneth Stay of Plattsburgh, Master of Business Administration; Jenna Mayette of Plattsburgh, Master of Science in Education and Douglas Racette of Saranac Lake, Master of Science in Education.

Leigh Anne Connors of Lake Placid has been named to the Plymouth State University Dean’s List in New Hampshire. Students must achieve a GPA between 3.5 and 3.69 to achieve placement.

Nicole Lagree of Bloomingdale received a degree in Animal and Equine Science & Management from Morrisville State College, and Nicole LaFountain of Chazy was awarded a degree in massage therapy and has been named to the President’s List for the spring semester.

Keegan Ryan and Maile Sapp, graduates of the Class of 2013 from Beekmantown Central School, are the recipients of the National Scholar Athlete Award from the U.S. Army. Ryan will attend St. John Fisher College with an Honors, Trustee and SJFC scholarship. Sapp will attend Harvard University with a faculty scholarship.

Beekmantown Central School graduate Ian Dwyer of West Chazy and a member of the Colgate University, Hamilton, Class of 2014, is one of 150 students conducting research on and off campus this summer as a paid research fellow. Dwyer’s research is in the Ho Tung Visualization Lab with the guidance of IT Professor Joseph Eakin. 

Area students who will be freshmen at SUNY Oswego include Brielle Cerne of Cadyville, Brennan L. Butler of Lake Placid, Justin Stosiek of Lake Placid, Danielle Trimm of Moira, Mary Catherine Mazzella of Peru, Noah J. Phillips of Peru, Hunter M. Bruno of Plattsburgh, Austin M. Martino of Plattsburgh, Dylan J. Charland of Saranac, Marisa M. McDonough of Saranac Lake and Justin B. Rose of West Chazy.

The following local high-school students were awarded the 2013 Saint Michael’s College Book Awards for Academic Achievement with a social conscience: Danielle Clemons of Peru (Peru Senior High School), Adele Jesmer of Wilmington (Lake Placid Central School), Anthony Miller of Wilmington (Lake Placid Central School), Cody O’Hara of Ticonderoga Ticonderoga High School), John Selkirk of Chateaugay (Chateaugay Central School), Shelby Spaulding of Ticonderoga (Ticonderoga Central School) and Haylee Tower of Chateaugay (Chateaugay Central School). The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to leadership in volunteer service and academic achievement and are inductees into the National Honor Society. Winners were presented with the book “First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers” by Loung Ung, a powerful autobiographical account from a child’s perspective of surviving captivity during the genocidal Pol Pot regime in Cambodia. Ung heads an ongoing crusade for a landmine-free world.
