Student Recognition: March 13, 2014

North Country Community College elected Briana Munoz to be the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival princess. She is actively engaged with the college community and the community at large, tutors in the Learning Assistance Center an dis secretary of the Environmental Club. Munoz volunteers with the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service and coaches ice skating for the Malone Figure Skating Club. She also works at the Breakfast Club Restaurant in Lake Placid. An avid lover of sports, she hikes, figure skates and kayaks. She is also the 2008 Junior National Figure Skating Champion and the recipient of the bronze medal for luge in the 2010 Empire State Games. Bilingual in English and German, she has been accepted to SUNY Geneseo to study biology, planning to be a physician’s assistant.

Several area students have become members of the Clinton County Youth Court Program, having passed an exam after attending a 12-hour training. They are Anthony Barcomb, Rachel Barnes, Gabriela Beatham-Garcia, Sarah Bracy, Clarissa Chambers, Megan Frederick, Tavin Head, Ali Keable, Jessica Kramer, Eryn Rabideau, Olivia Sorrell and Luke Walker.

Three area residents who are students at Alfred State SUNY College of Technology have been recognized for academic achievement. Jerrad John of Hogansburg and Lauren Marlowe and Hannah Tatro, both of Malone, have been named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester.

Named to the Dean’s List at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, are area students Brett Palmer of Plattsburgh, who earned highest honors; Taylor Witkiewicz of Plattsburgh; Elizabeth Izzo of Lake Placid; Douglas Osborne of Peru; and Olyvia Newgarden of West Chazy.

Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, N.H., has recognized Zaidee H. Laughlin, a sophomore, and Alexandra M. Betrus, a senior, both of Plattsburgh, for high honors. Betrus’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Steven Betrus and Laughlin’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Trevor D. Laughlin.
