Seven SUNY Plattsburgh Upward Bound students attended the program's fourth-annual Leadership and Governance Trip in Albany April 13 to 15: Dan Ormsbee, Ashley Rice, Frankie Garrow, Jane Grems, Ngozi Eweheonu, Katie Mulligan, Tegan Spinner and Devan Coskey. The students were given tours of Albany Law School and the State Capitol. They were introduced to the Assembly by Assemblywoman Janet Duprey. The students were able to practice their leadership and governance skills when then met with their state legislators: Sen. Elizabeth Little, Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward and Assemblywoman Janet Duprey.
Bebbyn A. Schafer, daughter of Phil and Kim Schafer of Keeseville, received her doctorate of pharmacy degree from the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy on May 7.
Schafer has been accepted into a one-year residency program at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia, S.C.
She is a 2002 graduate of AuSable Valley Central School.
Rebecca Beeman, a 2005 Chazy Central Rural School graduate, was inducted into the Anthenian Honor Society at Russell Sage College in Troy on May 9.
Eligibility for membership requires a 3.4 cumulative grade-point average or higher over four consecutive semesters of full-time study.
Megan Munson has been named to the Dean's List for the 2008 spring semester at Clinton Community College.
Munson is the daughter of Scott and Pam Munson of Moriah.
Jon Wolleben, a 2005 graduate of Plattsburgh High School, was selected to the Dean's List with high honors for the spring semester at Mellon College of Science of Carnegie Mellon University. He majors in biology and is the son of Bob and Mary Wolleben.
Jack Homer of Plattsburgh, who attends Vermont Commons School, has been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program for scoring high marks on three Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tests last fall: critical reading, mathematics and writing skills. He is one of only 50,000 students in the United States to earn that recognition this year. This represents the top 3.5 percent of the 1.4 million students who participated in the program last fall.
Homer participates in ultimate Frisbee, volleyball and biking at Vermont Commons. Last fall, he participated in a school Encounter Week that involved a five-day bike trip around Lake Champlain. He is enrolled in a research and service class that connects the students with Bike Recycle Vermont, a non-profit that helps low-income Vermonters by providing refurbished bikes and job-training skills.
Homer has been on the honor roll since he transferred to Vermont Commons as a ninth-grade student in 2006. He has a cumulative GPA of 3.83 and was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2007.
He is the son of John and Mary Homer.
Simone Arvisais-Anhalt, a Plattsburgh High School student, has been awarded an AFS 2008 Arabic Summer Language Institute Scholarship, a distinction shared by only 30 high-school students nationwide.
This merit-based program awards full scholarships for an intensive Arabic language study program in Cairo, Egypt.
The program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and AFS Intercultural Programs/USA.
Arvisais-Anhalt will take part in intensive Arabic language courses, as well as opportunities to visit important historical sites and interact with Egyptian parliamentarians and leaders. During the six-week program, she also will gain firsthand knowledge of the Egyptian culture by living with a host family to experience life as a member of a family, school and community.
