Hannah J. McAdam, daughter of Tracey and Randy McAdam of Brushton, graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a bachelor's degree in politics and a minor in pre-law.
She is a member of the Honor's Program; Phi Eta Sigma, the freshman honor society and Phi Kappa Phi, an all-discipline honor society, and was inducted into Pi Sigma Alpha, the national Greek political science honor society at Potsdam. McAdam is a recipient of the Canfield Scholarship and was Student Government Association administrative vice president during her senior year.
A graduate of Brushton-Moira Central School, she will attend Hofstra University, Hempstead, to study law. She is also the granddaughter of Susan and Toby Tobias of Plattsburgh, Alec McAdam of West Chazy and the late Dorothy McAdam and Raymond and Carol Gardner of Malone.
Kristin Linder, a graduating senior from Westport Central School is the 2008 Grant W. Johnson Scholarship recipient. She will receive a check for $1000. Linder will attend the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences where she is enrolled in the six-year program to receive her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She is the daughter of Daniel and Carol Linder.
Since 1969, the Republican Women of Essex County have awarded the Grant W. Johnson Scholarship to a qualified graduating senior from Essex County. The student must be accepted in a degreed college program, have a registered affiliation (either student or parent) with the Republican Party, have demonstrated leadership qualities, supply high school transcripts and write an essay on a topic provided.
Linder and her mother attended the Republican Women of Essex County luncheon held on June 7. Kristin read her essay on The Importance of Party Affiliation to the approximately 80 guests in the audience. She spoke of the women suffragists who fought long and hard for the women's right to vote. Kristin received a standing ovation as she finished reading her speech. She also enjoyed meeting former New York First Lady, Libby Pataki, who gave the keynote speech.
Linder has excelled throughout her four years in high school maintaining a grade point average in the high 90's.
Mary Castine, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Victor Castine of Plattsburgh, has been named to the Dean's List at Plattsburgh State for the spring semester with a GPA of 3.925. The Plattsburgh High School Class of 2005 graduate has been inducted into Psi Chi, the National Honor Society of Psychology, Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, and is a Leaders of Tomorrow Scholar. Mary has completed course requirements for a major in psychology and a minor in biology. She plans to apply to the nursing program at Plattsburgh State, with future plans of becoming a nurse practitioner specializing in internal medicine and counseling.
Nicholas Bruno, junior mathematics major at Saint Michael's College, Colster, Vt., presented a paper at the 15th-annual Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference held at St. Lawrence University in Canton. Bruno, son of Kris and Kim Bruno of Peru, spoke on "Some Congruences of the Fibonacci Sequence Modulo a Prime."
Bruno was one of 11 Saint Michael's College students who gave presentations at the conference. He graduated from Peru Jr.-Sr. High School before coming to Saint Michael's, a liberal arts residential Catholic college located in the Burlington area of Vermont.
Linda Bourgeois, CEO UFirst FCU, and Jody Carpenter, marketing director at UFirst FCU, attended the Community Service Donor-Scholar Breakfast recently. UFirst, in cooperation with Plattsburgh College Foundation, awarded Kimberly Lashmet a Community Service Scholarship which assists her with tuition, room and board in exchange for a service commitment. Lashmet volunteered at the Traumatic Brain Injury Center. The Community Service Scholarship has three goals: To nurture the scholars' existing commitment to service and to build their lifelong commitment to service; to help the local community by providing volunteer leadership; and to help Plattsburgh State recruit students who will become leaders for their peers.
Lisa Jabaut, daughter of James D. Jabaut of Plattsburgh, was inducted into Psi Chi, the National Psychology Honor Society, at Saint Michael's College during induction ceremonies on the Vermont college campus. Jabaut graduated from Peru Jr.-Sr. High School before coming to Saint Michael's.
SUNY Potsdam student Seth Dwyer DeFayette of Plattsburgh has been selected as a candidate for the prestigious United University Professions (UUP) College Scholarship worth $2,000 after a rigorous application process involving an essay, letters of recommendation and several student records.
DeFayette is a junior double majoring in archaeology and French. He is a graduate of Plattsburgh Senior High School and is the son of Thomas and Deborah DeFayette.
Clarkson University senior Ryan Davies of Plattsburgh is a member of the Clarkson University Remediation Engineers (CURE) environmental design team that won the best bench-scale and oral presentation award in the 18th-annual International Environmental Design Contest (EDC) at New Mexico State University. The team is part of the university's Student Projects for Engineering Experience and Design (SPEED) program. Davies is majoring in civil engineering.
The Clarkson team's design task was to design an inland desalination process, including the safe disposal of non-hazardous waste in rural, isolated communities. The developed process would supply sufficient drinking water for a town of approximately 40,000 people in rural New Mexico at economical rates. The team's proposed solution for the conversation of brackish
(salty) water into drinking water included the use of green technologies such as a renewable heat source and the sale of 20 tons per day of gypsum recovered from the source water.
Noelle L. Whitney, daughter of Scott and Karen Whitney of Peru, made the Dean's List at University at Albany for the fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters with a 4.0 GPA. Whitney was also inducted into the National Honor Society in Psychology.
