Frances H. Filshie, former High Peaks Hospice CEO and Essex County public health director, has been appointed to the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System Board of Trustees, representing the residents of Essex County.
Peter Bauer received an Adirondack Achievement Award from the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks. Bauer was recognized for his many achievements during 13 years as executive director of the Residents' Committee to Protect the Adirondacks. The award was presented at AFPA's 107th-annual meeting in Lake Placid.
Bauer is the executive director of the Fund for Lake George, and resides in Queensbury and Blue Mountain Lake.
Peter Brinkley of Jay, was presented with AFPA's Outstanding Leadership Award for his six years as president of the organization's board of trustees.
Mayor George Rivers of the Village of Rouses Point was appointed to the eight-member nominating committee of the New York State Conference of Mayors.
Conference of Mayors President Ernest Strada, mayor of the Village of Westbury, made the selection, saying: "Mayor Rivers has been an active participant in NYCOM programs and is well suited to serve on this important committee. His commitment to quality public service in New York state will ensure that the continued leadership of the Conference of Mayors remains in good hands."
The Nominating Committee was responsible for assembling the slate of officers, which were elected June 9 at the group's 99th-annual meeting in Saratoga Springs.
The Conference of Mayors represents more than 590 cities and villages in New York state, ranging from the smallest village to the City of New York.
Peru Central School District's Hall of Fame induction ceremony for 2008 was held June 12. The annual induction ceremony is in conjunction with Peru's annual academic awards recognition banquet.
Inducted was alumna Fran Allen (1950), who earned the SUNY Albany Distinguished Alumni Award, the 2006 Turing Award for computer programming, and is a member of the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame.
Also inducted was John Roach, Koren War veteran, who rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve after 43 years of military service. Roach taught biology and life sciences for 35 years at Peru Central. He continues to live a life of service to the public. He is a member of the Peru Fire Department, and has been since 1964.
This year's third inductee was Ron Wilson, former Peru High School and Southside principal. Wilson was a teacher at Peru Central for 15 years and was a Peru administrator for 14 years. He was the Peru Teacher of the Year in 1979. Wilson's passion for the Adirondacks and for children led him to develop the "Adirondack Experience" alternative education program. After retirement, he became a field supervisor of student teachers for Plattsburgh State, and president of the Northeastern Zone of the New York State Retired Teachers Association.
The Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries has named James S. Bonner, Ph.D., P.E., as REON director of research. A nationally recognized expert in real-time water monitoring technologies, Bonner will lead the development and implementation of the River and Estuary Observatory Network to create the first technology-based monitoring and forecasting network for rivers and estuaries. REON is a joint effort between The Beacon Institute, IBM and Clarkson University.
Bonner is the son of Philip and Lu Bonner of Peru, a Peru High School graduate, and a Plattsburgh State graduate.
In addition to his new post with The Beacon Institute, Bonner concurrently serves as director of the Center for the Environment at Clarkson University in Potsdam, where he is a member of the civil and environmental engineering faculty.
