Forrence asked to resign, is weighing options

PERU -- Some Town of Peru residents have asked for the resignation of Councilor Cortland Forrence, citing his numerous absences from regular meetings this year.

Edward Schiffler, speaking during a recent meeting's public-comment period, asked councilors to seek Forrence's immediate resignation if he does not plan to attend more regularly. Schiffler presented a list showing that Forrence had missed eight of the last 12 meetings.

Schiffler said he was concerned that Forrence might be balking at resigning due to political reasons. If he doesn't resign by a certain date, the open seat will not be up for election in November but will be appointed by the Town Council.

Councilors did not respond to Schiffler's request.

Contacted by phone, Forrence said he is still considering his options and that they did not include any political motive.

"I was elected by a lot of voters from the Town of Peru, and I have to base my decision on a lot of factors."

He said he has missed several meetings because of increased demands from a new business he has started, 87 M, on Margaret Street in Plattsburgh.

"I have to consider what is best for my family, best for my new business and best for the taxpayers of Peru.

"My new business has taken up more time than I first anticipated, but I have anticipated that things will slow down and I will be able to return to my duties for the town.

"If I can't fulfill my responsibilities as a councilor, then I should go."

But with the 2009 budget process looming ahead, Forrence said, he has been hesitant to resign because of his role in preparing the budget. He took a major role in the 2008 budget and believes experienced support for the upcoming sessions will be vital.

He also said the current atmosphere in the town has also played a role in his lack of attendance.

"The atmosphere is still very ugly," he said of the conditions at Town Hall over the past two-and-one-half years.

"Some people don't want to work for the best interest of the town, and it has become very stressful for everyone involved."

Forrence said he has not been asked by the Town Council to resign but would step down if officially asked to. Otherwise, he will make a decision either way in the near future.
