Malone Winter Carnival events kick off today

MALONE — Organizers hope events like the Winter Carnival parade here today will continue to spark a revival of community spirit in Malone.

Beginning at 10 a.m., more than 50 participating groups and organizations will make their way down Main Street (Route 11) from Brewster Street behind the Franklin County Courthouse to Morton Street, said Parade Coordinator Andrea Dumas.

“We’ve got schools, the fire department and several local businesses that are going to be part of it,” she said.

The theme of this year’s parade is “Let’s Make a Scene from Stage to Screen.”

The grand marshal is Ann Main, wife of late County Court Judge Robert G. Main and mother of current County, Surrogate and Family Court Judge Robert G. Main Jr.

Mrs. Main, who was salutatorian of her class at Franklin Academy in 1944, worked in the office of U.S. Sen. Alexander Wiley of Wisconsin before returning to Malone to work.

Following her 1950 marriage, she served as a religious educator and later as the longtime director of the Notre Dame Catholic Church program and was a founding member of the St. Vincent de Paul store.

Mrs. Main, 85, designs and knits baby caps and has been a volunteer at Alice Hyde Medical Center, served on the Academic Board of Trustees at Franklin Academy and was inducted into the school’s Academic Hall of Fame in 2012.

Leading the parade will be the Malone American Legion Post 219 Color Guard and Upstate Correctional Facility Color Guard, with Malone Village Police Chief Chris Premo.

Members of the Franklin County Legislature, Malone Town Council and Village Board will walk the parade route, along with an assortment of floats, clowns, horses from Sayward’s Classic Carriage Service, children from St. Joseph’s Elementary School dressed as Dr. Seuss characters and more entries.
