Franklin County Fair plans for big grandstand crowds

More track seating added

MALONE — With well-known acts such as country music superstar Vince Gill and the Little River Band headlining the grandstand entertainment for this year’s Franklin County Fair, turnout is expected to be high.

The 163rd edition of the fair runs Aug. 3 to 11. Tickets for grandstand concerts are already on sale.

“We expect, if we have the weather, that we’ll have a better year (than last),” said Pat Maneely, secretary of the Franklin County Agricultural Society Board of Directors. “Vince Gill, I mean we’ve had people call from all over the state that want to come to see him. He’s a big name.”

Since the fair staff figures they will have large crowds for the headline concerts, the number of track seats that are available for those two shows has been expanded. In addition to the grandstand seating, there will be 1,080 track seats for the Vince Gill concert and 1,020 track seats for the Little River Band concert.

Aside from the two concerts, there are other grandstand events that are sure to attract big crowds, as well. These events include tractor and truck pulls, Tony Peterson Hell Drivers daredevil show, a hometown parade, the Franklin County Has Talent Show, the Painted Pony Rodeo, horse harness racing and the demolition derby.

Demolition derby entries will be taken at the Franklin County Fair office starting today and running through July 26. The cost to enter is $30, and anyone who is 16 or older and has a valid driver’s permit can join in the bone-jarring fun. Everyone who enters is required to fill out an entry form and sign a release waiver. However, 16- and 17-year-old drivers must also have permission from a legal guardian. For the derby, there is a two-car limit per person for each night of the competition.
