ROTA Gallery has new site

PLATTSBURGH — In three days of moving from Margaret Street, volunteers relocated the ROTA Gallery to 39 Bridge St.

“I opened the door, and insulation was falling from the ceiling,” ROTA President Jenn Allen said regarding the hurried move between locations.

Volunteers worked quickly so the re-opening would coincide with the Art Walk on July 4, which was part of the First Weekends event.

“It was very close,” Allen said. “We had to bring the whole community together to get into the new space.”

The gallery, which has been part of downtown Plattsburgh since 2011, hosts art shows, live music and educational workshops.

ROTA is a worker co-operative run exclusively by volunteers, many of them members.

One member, Gharan Burton, had more than 40 paintings on display at the opening.

Burton initially majored in computer science at college before pursuing a degree in art.

“This is a wide selection, probably going far back as 2008 and then up to last week,” Burton said of his body of work.

In August, the gallery will share the new location with Jason Mashtare’s Krav Maga martial arts and fitness classes.

“The space is going to be partially dedicated to the fitness area, and the front space will be for the ROTA Gallery,” Allen said.

“It’s art and healthy living.”
