All singers, songwriters in the house

PLATTSBURGH — Oh! Betty is back with some new and old faces at Friday’s Palmer Street Coffeehouse in Plattsburgh.

“Our band is picking up where we left off when we did our CD (‘I’m Still Standin’) a couple of years back,” said Julie Canepa, who, with Tim Hartnett, make up Oh! Betty.

“Now, we’ve added bass and drums. Bob Garrow, he’s in the Adirondack Jazz Orchestra and a music teacher at Northern Adirondack Central. Bob Newton is formerly of the Natalie Ward Band and Clem Hawkins Band.

“We’re just branching out into things that Tim thought we couldn’t do with just the two of us. We have some new original tunes we’re working on.”

Oh! Betty mixes it up with classic rock and country standards and now jazzy rockabilly.

“More uptempo and high-energy stuff,” Canepa said.

Friday’s Harnett and Canepa & Friends Extravaganza features Big Slyde, Giovanina Bucci, Ava Goble and Irene Delgado Delpree, Josée Allard and Paul Carson.

“At Palmer Street, our band is hosting instead of just Tim and me,” Canepa said. “It’s invited open mike. We’re so excited about the people we have coming.”

Big Slyde is fronted by father-daughter duo John and Hannah Doan. Band members are Mikey Portal (guitar and vocals), Christina Grant (cello) and Dusty Grant (percussion).

“John is a really great banjo player and plays every instrument imaginable,” Canepa said. “He and his daughter do amazing harmonies together, and they have been playing together for years. It’s a blend of bluegrass and roots rock. We’re lucky to have their other band members coming also.”

Singer/songwriter Bucci is busy on both sides of Lake Champlain. She appears regularly at Irises, Olive Ridley’s and the Monopole in Plattsburgh and at Radio Bean Coffeehouse and Red Square in Burlington.
