NCCCA offers fresh way to sell art

PLATTSBURGH — The Artists Market is the newest venture of the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts.

The event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, features 15 artists.

“We used to have a gift shop in the arts center, but over the last couple of years it’s become harder to run with lack of staff and volunteers so it was closed most of the day,” said Shawna Armstrong, the center’s gallery and graphics coordinator.

“That was not a benefit for us or the artists trying to sell. We have liquidated the gift shop and are replacing it with the Artists Market three times a year.”

Handmade fine art includes ceramics, photography, jewelry, paintings, sculpture, prints, fiber arts and spices.

“We sent out a call to vendors and local artist members or non-members. They can sell their handmade fine-art goods. The idea was that more people would come to a one-day event,” Armstrong said.

Clay demonstrations will be held in the Jackie Sabourin Clay Studio.

Shawn Parrotte, who teaches a workshop at the center called “Garage Band,” will perform.

Jeff Woodard, instructor of the center’s Second Sunday Family Arts program, will teach children and parents how to make egg-carton creatures.

“There will be another activity, mask making for kids,” Armstrong said. “There will be an ice cream bar where kids can decorate ice cream sundaes. We will have a photo-booth section with props and things kids can play with, and they can take photos.”

“Essex Autumn,” a limited-edition watercolor print by Lorraine Lilja, will be offered in a 50/50 raffle.

“It’s an Artists Market but an open house for us,” Armstrong said. “The idea is a carnival-like atmosphere where people can browse vendors and get to know the arts center better.”
