---- — PLATTSBURGH  — Abby was dogged before she was rescued.

The emaciated German shepherd weighed 20 pounds and was pregnant with 10 puppies.

“All her weight was her puppies,” said Kendra Maroon, Abby’s owner who adopted her from the Elmore SPCA.

“She had an ax taken to her between her eyes. Now, she weighs 46 pounds. She’s been trained as a diabetic-alert dog for me. I’m diabetic.”

Maroon, on disability, did not possess extra money to donate to the organization for all its good work. So, she organized “Pottery for Pets,” Saturday’s fundraiser for the animal shelter.

“This is an event I did in New Hampshire, and I recently moved here. In May, I adopted my dog Abby from Elmore SPCA. So, I’m paying forward by putting on this event,” she said.

Twelve potters from the North Country Potters Guild have made 52 pieces of pottery.

“We got 32 artists to paint them. Some of the painting is whimsical. Some is in the artist’s genre. Some are nature, mountains. Other people painted cats and dogs. There’s pasta bowls, candy dishes, cat and dog bowls,” Maroon said.

Jackie Sabourin, a pottery teacher at the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, organized the potters.

“She got them to make things. She worked with us on getting them all glazed and fired. She did so much work. It’s unbelievable,” Maroon said.

Saturday’s events begin with a silent auction at 5:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Plattsburgh. A live auction follows at 6:15 p.m.

“Our celebrity auctioneer is Gordie Little. He’s a riot. We also have entertainment by Serge and the Lonestar Band. They’re donating their services,” she said.

There is a cash bar. Appetizers were donated by The Great Adirondack Soup Company, Dickie’s Barbecue Pit, Sawatdee Authentic Thai & Vegetarian Restaurant, Cocktails Club & Eatery, Champlain Valley Specialties and the Holiday Inn.

“The Skinny Baker, she’s doing desserts,” Maroon said. “A volunteer at Elmore is making a big cake with a doghouse on it.”

Event “Top Dog” sponsors are: Midas of Plattsburgh, Champlain Spine and Pain Management, the NCCCA, Cumberland 12 Cinemas, North Country Pottery Guild, Stone Ledge Pottery, WIRY, Eagle Country and Studley Printing.
