---- — PLATTSBURGH — Monday evenings are for musicians and those aspiring to be with “Succeeding in Music,” a series of workshops and discussions held through Nov. 18 at the ROTA Gallery and Studios.
The series, conceived by Adrian Carr and Jeremiah Ward, was made possible through a decentralization grant administered by the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts.
“We put our heads together,” said Carr, who is a pianist, composer and Grammy-nominated mastering engineer.
“In Vermont and Quebec, they encourage local music and local musicians. They try to grow it. It’s such a great thing to take pride in. That’s our concept, what we wanted to do at ROTA. We figured out how we can do this.”
Monday’s introductory session with Carr and Matt Hall, one of ROTA’s founders, explored the music community in the North Country. All sessions are held at 7 p.m. Mondays.
A “Songwriting Workshop” with Roy Hurd will be held on Sept. 23. Hurd, a Nashville veteran, will give tips on songwriting and the back story of some of the chart-topping songs he has written.
“We thought we could bring in great speakers to talk about music in 2013,” Carr said. “We came up with this eight-week, multi-session workshop idea where participants can pay on a sliding scale. Suggested donation is $5 for an evening of great information and talking with an expert in the field.”
Carr leads the “Introduction to Recording and Mastering” workshop on Sept. 30.
Larry Dolan of The Granary leads a recording discussion on Oct. 7.
Hall, an independent musician, discusses the indie scene on Oct. 21. Participants will learn about recording, promoting and touring as well as a do-it-yourself ethical approach.
Bryan Martin of the Montreal-based studio Sonosphere discusses production on Oct. 28.
In the 1990s, Martin, a seminal producer, worked in his New York City studio as well as at major studios around the world.
“He’s doing a session on what a producer does and how to make better music,” Carr said.
The session on Nov. 4 is to be announced.
On Nov. 11, a “Songwriting and Performance Critique” session will help artists achieve their best.
The series culminates on Nov. 18 with a public performance of workshop participants.
“We hope it will be a great how-to for musicians in the area,” Carr said. “We’re getting the word out.”
