US Army Jazz Ambassadors to perform locally

PLATTSBURGH — The U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors of Washington, D.C., will present free public performances Saturday, March 29, and Sunday, March 30.

The Saturday show will start at 7 p.m. at the Moriah Central School high school auditorium.

The Sunday performance will begin at 3 p.m. at the SUNY Plattsburgh Field House. The concert in Plattsburgh is sponsored by SUNY Plattsburgh and the Press-Republican.

The Jazz Ambassadors travels thousands of miles each year throughout the nation and abroad, keeping the will of the American people behind the members of the armed forces and supporting diplomatic efforts around the world, a press release states. Since forming in 1969, the Jazz Ambassadors have appeared in all 50 states and throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

The Jazz Ambassadors presents a diverse program of big band swing, Latin music, contemporary jazz, popular tunes, standards, Dixieland and patriotic selections, according to the release.

Pendragon recognizes Young Playwrights’ winners

SARANAC LAKE — Pendragon Theatre has announced the winners of the Young Playwrights’ Festival.

Witter Swanson, a student at Saranac Lake High School, will receive a full production of his play “Elmer.” The runner-up receiving a reading of her piece is Amber Baker, a student at Beekmantown, for her play “The Esteemed Institute.”

Swanson, Baker and the Pendragon crew will be on hand April 5 for a full day of festival activities.

From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Pendragon invites children in grades one through six to join Jessica Deeb and Executive Artistic Director Karen Lordi-Kirkham for a workshop entitled “Playwriting on Your Feet.”

From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., join judges Fred Balzac, Karen Lewis and Lordi-Kirkham for a panel discussion and workshop on playwriting.

At 7 p.m., Swanson’s “Elmer” will be performed and Baker’s “The Esteemed Institute” will be read for the public.
