Pouring Light hosts 'Migrating Passerines,' a student exhibition

MALONE — Michael Hart and Mark Bondi wrestled the latter’s untitled-steel sculpture into the bed of Hart’s teal truck in front of the John Myers Fine Arts Building at SUNY Plattsburgh.

The sculpture will be one of approximately 40 works in “Migrating Passerines," an annual exhibition of art student’s works at the Pouring Light Studios and Gallery in Malone.

The show opens Saturday and runs through April 12.

“This work I did a while ago,” said Bondi, a senior majoring in drawing with a complement in sculpture.

“It was one of my original pieces, and I think it is one of my strongest. It was really a lot about exploring the process and learning how to put these things together and watching the growth of it. I think from it, without any ideas really yet just sort of wanting to build sculpture, I was able to create more freely. I think it’s got some good energy from that.”

Inside Myers, Hart viewed the other works for the first time with Emma Huneck, president of the Plattsburgh Association of the Visual Arts.

"This is part of the process, coming to pick up the work," said Hart, who owns the gallery with Kiefer Sloate-Dowden. "It’s like harvesting a crop. It’s always exciting."

Hart offers students a chance for their works to be out there on their own: independent.

“That refers to the title ‘Migrating Passerines,’” he said. “They are flying the coop for awhile anyway. It’s a range of sculpture, drawing, painting. There are some seniors. Last year, there were quite a few juniors and sophomores. I’m sure there will be some repeats. And out of this group, hopefully a year later, we will have a solo show of one of the graduates. That’s what we did with Madeleine Bialke.”
