Saranac Lake ready for First Night

SARANAC LAKE — Festive fun begins today at 5:45 p.m., when Mayor Clyde Rabideau opens First Night Saranac Lake 2014.

From 6 p.m. to midnight, the good times roll with Ad Hoc Quartet #3 performing Schubert’s “Quartet No. 9 in G minor”; the ukulele-driven sextet Crackin’ Foxy; and Driftwood, an Americana/roots band from Binghamton.

“This is First Night Saranac Lake’s eighth year, which is pretty amazing,” said Susan Patterson, who co-chairs the annual family-oriented, alcohol-free celebration of the arts with Connie Landon.

“We’re very excited about that. We have 12 venues all over town. We have the Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir. We’ve never had them before, so they’re new. Fifty percent of the people are new every year. We try to mix it up to have a wide variety.”

Loonworks, a family fun show, features Trillium and Poofski at the Saranac Lake Library.

At BluSeed Studios, Heather Styka, a Chicago native and Maine transplant, takes the stage.

Jim Griebsch’s “Historic Motion Pictures of Saranac Lake’s Past” screens at 8 and 9 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church.

“It’s a work in progress,” Patterson said.

Duo Julie Robards and Don Vicaro offer up folk and soft rock in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

The Harrietstown Town Hall will rock-abilly with Mark Gamsjager & the Lustre Kings.

“They are from the Capital District,” Patterson said. “We try and have a variety — we have storytelling (Mitch Lee) and folk music. We have the River Rats, a steel-drum band from Carthage made up mostly of high-school kids.”

Masters of the Keys — Annemieke Spoelstra and Jeremiah McLane — perform music by composers from Europe and South America.

“We have a ventriloquist, Sylvia Fletcher,” Patterson said. “She’s a lot of fun. The PBR Band (Rich Lester, Michel and Donna Perron, Phil VanNortwick and Bill Hungerford) is from the Malone area.”
