Summer arts programs


open to kids

SARANAC LAKE — Three one-week art programs for artists in grades three through eight are planned at Bluseed Studios in August.

From July 20 through 24 is Adventures in Clay, which explores both hand building and wheel throwing. Animation Fascination, July 27 through 31, allows experimentation with animation using traditional stop-motion techniques. Adventures in Color, Aug. 3 through 7, offers a workshop in acrylic painting and another creating a 3-D totem or chair.

Classes are from 10 a.m. to noon. Cost is $100, with scholarships available.

deadline nears

WESTPORT — Monday, July 13, is the deadline to register for the New York State Rural Arts workshop "Surviving through Regional Collaborations & Resource Sharing," set for 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at the Westport Heritage House, 6459 Main St., Westport.

According to a press release, workshop participants will take part in a facilitated brainstorming session on what arts and cultural organizations need and want and how these issues could be addressed through resource sharing efforts. Then they will explore a few Adirondack/North Country collaborations.

The workshop is free and open to the public, but preregistration is requested. Call 962-8778 or e-mail info@artsnorth.org.

Arts program offered for kids


BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts is hosting workshops for children this summer.

"Parent and Me" for children ages 3 through 6 and their parents will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. July 14 and 28 and Aug. 11 and 25. Workshops will include sculpture, masks and movement, finger painting and dance styles. The cost for each is $8/$5 members.

For children ages 7 to 12, "Kids Workshop Wednesdays" provide performing and visual arts learning experiences, a press release said. Held Wednesdays in July and August from 10 to 11:30 a.m., they begin July 15. The cost for each is $10/$8 members.

Register for three workshops and get one free, the release said.

Seminars required for grant application


PLATTSBURGH — Information seminars by North Country Cultural Center for the Arts are continuing for those who wish to apply for Decentralization Grants in Clinton and Franklin counties.

19 Oak St., Plattsburgh; 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, at the Cultural Center, 30 Brinkerhoff St., Plattsburgh; 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at Dodge Memorial Library, 144 Lake St., Rouses Point; 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at the Cultural Center; 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, Chateaugay Public Library, 191 Main St., Chateaugay; 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at Franklin County Historical Society, 51 Milwaukee St., Malone.

The grants are available to nonprofit organizations planning a cultural or art-related activity in 2009. The maximum grant is $5,000 per applicant and re-grant applicants may submit up to three requests for arts projects with a maximum award of $5,000.

are announced

WESTPORT — The Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks has announced the recipients of the Special Opportunity Stipend Grant Round 3 for opportunities in July through October.

They are Richard Brogowski, Anni Lorenzini and Ronald Nolland, all of Clinton County; Phil Gallos of Franklin County; and Lee Kazanas and Shami J. McCormick, both of Essex County.

The grant is designed to help individual artists of all disciplines take advantage of unique opportunities that will significantly benefit their work or career development, a press release said.

Deadlines are in February, May and September each year; there is no waiting period for artists to reapply if they have received funding previously.

The money is made available through the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Dinner and show package offered


POTSDAM — Community Performance Series and the 1844 House are teaming up to offer patrons a special dinner and a show package deal that will be available July 28 through Aug. 1.

To complement the production of "The King and I," running nightly at 7:30 p.m. in SUNY Potsdam's Snell Theater, the 1844 House offers dinner for $20 per ticket per person (tax and gratuity included).

This five-course meal is only available to the first 20 "The King and I" ticket buyers that register for each night's performance, a press release said.
