Woodworking shed gutted by blaze

Tools, trailer, car among lost items

CHESTERFIELD — Brent Morrow lost his woodworking shed, his tools and other contents in a fire on Monday afternoon.

The blaze gutted the structure at 282 Giddings Road and spread to a tool shed, small, tow-behind trailer and a maroon Subaru.

All were damaged beyond repair, but Morrow's home was unscathed.

Keeseville Volunteer Fire Department was called to the burning structures at about 2 p.m., then Clinton County Fire Control summoned the Peru fire company and an air truck and other assistance from South Plattsburgh.

Morrow, who'd crafted picture frames and other items from wood in the shop, said he'd been working there not long before the fire. He guessed sparks from a saw he was using to sharpen an axe might have started the blaze, possibly after landing in sawdust on the floor.

He mainly used the shed for woodworking and had left to do some work down the road when he received a call about the fire.

"It really hurts, but it was just equipment and I can replace equipment," Morrow said. "It certainly could have been a lot worse."

His main concern was for his small log home, just feet away from where the workshop was located in a remote area amidst tall pine trees and layers of dried pine needles on the ground.

Keeseville Fire Chief Dave Perky said the workshop was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived, but it was easily contained.

He said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
