Musicians to strum up dollars for Plattsburgh theater

PLATTSBURGH — The Strand Theatre may not have its own sound and lighting system yet but area musicians have banded together to change that.

This weekend, 22 local and regional acts will offer 16 hours of music from every genre to put a dent in the $500,000 needed for a 21st-century sound and light system in the historic theater.

The Strand, on Brinkerhoff Street in Downtown Plattsburgh, is nearing the end of a $3.6 million restoration.

Tonight's lineup includes Towne Meeting, Speedy Arnold & Alice Knight, Russ Bailey & Franz Pope, the Basement Blues Band and Zip City.

Devi Momot, said Leigh Mundy, board president of the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, "is on my capital campaign committee.

“She heard that Tim Hartnett had done this type of thing for his 50th birthday party. We thought, 'Wouldn’t this be great to get technical equipment for the Strand.' So Tim had recently been in the Strand and was totally amazed at what we’ve done and agreed to put on this fundraiser.”

OLD-TIME MUSICIANS

A committee was organized for “Bring it Home for the Strand.”

Hartnett is the emcee.

“Tim was in charge of getting the music acts, the old-time musicians that were well known or loved in the past,” Mundy said.

“We got together the first list and about all of them said, 'Yes, it’s wonderful.'

"We also got some business sponsors so all our expenses would be covered.

Sound and lighting equipment, along with a tent for the beer garden, have to be rented for the affair.

And, Mundy said, 'we are going to do a T-shirt.”

WEEKEND PASS

On Saturday, the Too Tall String Band takes the stage at 1 p.m. followed by Joan Crane & Steve Feinbloom, Roy Hurd, the Stowaways and Eat.Sleep.Funk.
