Hamilton nets game-winner in OT for Cardinals

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer, for the second time in three games, found a way to win in overtime.

Matt Hamilton scored on a free kick with just 31 seconds remaining in the second extra session Wednesday night to give the Cardinals (3-0) a 3-2 victory over Norwich University in non-league action at the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse Complex.

“No question, we had some class performances (Thursday),” Plattsburgh coach Chris Waterbury said. “But this was a really good team win for us.

“At no point in the game, when I looked around at our players, was anyone’s head down. And once again, we had showed good maturity in the locker room at the half.”

It was a 1-all game at the half before Ryan Campbell scored on a header in the box to give the Cadets (2-1) the lead 13:48 into the second stanza.

“We came out strong in the second half, but Norwich was able to get a goal to take the lead,” Waterbury said.

“Then, with about 17 or 18 minutes left in regulation, we pulled a defender for an extra forward. We were able to get to the end line a little later and the next thing you know, it’s 2-2.”

Hamilton sent a pass in the box to Nick Parrella, who knotted the score with 14:30 left in regulation.

“Mitchell Jordon didn’t see a lot of action in goal for us, but he came up huge with about a minute and a half to go,” Waterbury said. “He made a save from point-blank range and was able to smother it.”

It remained tied until Hamilton gave the Cardinals the exciting victory with less than one minute remaining.

“Hamilton made a great free kick,” Waterbury said. “It came from about 25 yards out. Norwich set up a three-man wall and Joe Aratari was to the side of it. Matt sent in a really hard shot along the ground that Joe dummied and let go.
