---- — CANTON — The Plattsburgh State women’s volleyball team railed to force a fifth set after being down 2-1, but couldn’t complete the comeback, falling 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 20-25, 15-9) to St. Lawrence on Tuesday in Canton.

Neither team was willing to relent in its defense of the net, as evident by 21.5 total blocks in the tilt. The Cardinals put on a particularly strong defensive clinic in the first set, forcing the Saints to post an abysmal hitting percentage of -.021. The home team registered just nine kills on 47 attack attempts while committing 10 miscues.

Freshman right side player Jeanette Braun was the most imposing force at the face of the net, amassing six block assists during the match. Laura Diehl and Abby Mell added three block assists to the final tally as well.

It didn’t take long for the Saints to solve the blocking scheme of the Cardinals, though. The home squad saw their attack numbers spike sharply upward in the second and third sets, putting the Cardinals in a 2-1 hole thanks to a pair of 25-18 scores.

Thanks in large part to a shored up defense, the Cardinals held the Saints in check to knot things at two after a 25-20 set four. Rosi Cummings picked up yet another double-double, consisting of 10 kills and a team-high 17 digs but as strong as the Cardinals were on the block, the Saints stayed right with them the entire evening.

With 11 blocks to their credit, as well as a service ace advantage of 7-1, the Saints were able to sneak by in the fifth set by a score of 15-9.

Theresa Lilly was the go-to attacker for the Cardinals in their setback, posting the second Plattsburgh State double-double by smashing 10 kills on a team-high 38 attack attempts while scooping up 10 digs. The senior also picked up the lone service ace for the Cardinals. Diehl finished with eight kills while Mell added five to the coffers.

Kayla Nason dished out a team-high 19 assists while Kristen Marchisatto passed out 13 in the match.

Alexis Brown led the Saints with a match-high 22 terminations on 53 swings. Rebecca Doser added 13 for the Saints.

The Cardinals will have over a week to strategize before their next match. Plattsburgh State embarks on a journey to Colchester, Vt., looking to exact revenge against St. Michael’s after a 3-0 defeat at the 2012 Cardinal Classic. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
