Cardinals score early, often in rout of Cortland

PLATTSBURGH — The No. 1-ranked Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team did something that had occurred only nine previous times in its program’s storied history Saturday.

It managed to score 10 goals before the second period’s conclusion.

The Cardinals (14-0-1, 7-0-0) scored on six occasions in the first period before adding four more in the second period in a 10-1 drubbing of Cortland at the Stafford Ice Arena.

“I think the puck went in for us early (Saturday), which was good,” Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said. “To get that six-goal lead coming out of the first period is somewhat unexpected. But when you work hard and get pucks on net, sometimes they go in. They went in (Saturday).”

Chelsea VanGlahn recorded a hat trick, while Allison Era added two tallies in the nine-goal rout.

Katelyn Turk and Maggie Kolcon each scored their first-career goal at the collegiate level for the Cardinals.

“Katelyn Turk has played very well for us this year and hasn’t been able to find the back of the net, so it was good to see her score,” Houle said. “And of course Maggie, it was nice to see her score as well.”

Plattsburgh managed a 30-2 advantage in shots on goal after the first period and finished the tilt with the upperhand, leading that department by a 59-19 margin.

Sky Timmons scored the Red Dragons’ (2-10-2, 1-6-1) lone tally with 4:50 gone in the third period.

Cami Leonard, making her second-career start, stopped 18-of-19 shots in net for the win. Deanna Meunie (24) and Kelly Farinella (25) accumulated 49 saves for Cortland.

The Cardinals have now outscored their opponents 78-4, including a 56-2 mark at home.

Plattsburgh will travel to Utica College for a pair of ECAC West games Friday and Saturday.

The Cardinals grabbed three out of a possible four points against the Pioneers (9-3-0, 4-2-0) last season, salvaging a come-from-behind 3-3 tie in the first of two meetings.
