Happy holidays for Cardinal women

---- — PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team is going home for Christmas in an excellent spot — still undefeated and still No. 1 in the latest United States College Hockey Online Div. 3 poll.

In fact, Kevin Houle’s Cardinals picked up another first-place vote and now claim 12 of the 15 top nods. Plattsburgh also increased its lead from 13 to 15 points over No. 2 Gustavus Adolphus. The Gusties garnered the three remaining first-place votes in the Dec. 10 balloting.

The two teams also enter the break as the last two undefeated teams in Div. 3. The Cardinals improved to 10-0-1 with their 3-1 victory over Manhattanville on Friday while the Gusties are 8-0-0.

Plattsburgh is idle until Jan. 6 when the fifth-ranked Norwich University Cadets visit Stafford Arena to open the new year. The Cadets are responsible for the only blemish on the Plattsburgh record to date — a 2-2 tie on Oct. 28 in Northfield, Vt.

The Norwich rematch will open a busy January home schedule for the Cardinals with seven of the nine games to be contested in Plattsburgh. Oswego and Elmira will be in for weekend sets around a Jan. 16 visit from Williams. After a trip to Cortland for a pair, the Cardinals will host Middlebury College on Jan. 30.

Elmira and Middlebury are currently ranked third and fourth.

Men slip to 8th place

The Plattsburgh men fell one spot to eighth in the latest D3 rankings after losing 1-0 to top-ranked Norwich at home on Friday. The win enabled the Cadets to claim all 20 first-place votes as No. 2 Oswego lost ground to Norwich after splitting 2 weekend games. The Great Lakers bowed to Utica, 3-2, at home, and then topped Hobart, 3-2, in Geneva.

Bob Emery’s Cardinals, 7-3-1, shedded 32 points to fall behind Bowdoin. The Polar Bears, 9-0-1, tallied 188 points while the Cardinals managed 163, just three more than Utica College.

The Cardinals will have a short holiday break before returning to prep for the Cardinal Classic Dec. 28-29 at Stafford Arena. Elmira and Amherst will face off in the opener with Plattsburgh drawing Wesleyan.

Looking ahead, Plattsburgh will play only three home games the month of January. Middlebury and Williams will be on back-to-back nights Jan. 11-12 with Potsdam visiting the Cardinals’ Nest on Jan. 25.

Big shakeup in Div. I

The Div. I men’s poll has undergone a major change with Boston College vaulting past New Hampshire into the top spot. The BC Eagles, 11-2-1, also grabbed 35 first-place votes, picking up 16 more from last week while New Hampshire, 11-2-2, garnered nine votes and 921 points.

UNH lost to Boston University 3-2 last week while Boston College skated to a 3-3 tie with Providence College.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers remained a solid No. 1 in the women’s Div. I poll with all 15 first-place votes and a 23-point lead on No. 2 Clarkson.
